The Carissa Mine

The Carissa gold mine was the primary economic engine for South Pass City.  During the good years, many locals were employed as miners, hoist operators, & mill hands. The turn of the 20th century saw development underground. 1929, brought a new millhouse. After World War II, amazing new technology was introduced to the mine & mill. Unfortunately, during the bad years the Carissa was shuttered & a source speculation. The Carissa closed permanently in 1954.

In 2003, the State of Wyoming purchased the Carissa

& launched major restoration so the public can

experience a gold mine & mill first hand.
