Travel Tips

“Out in the middle of nowhere!”

When South Pass City was founded in 1868 it was on the edge of the frontier.  A traveler in 1900 would feel right at home if he were standing on Main street today.  But, for the modern traveler not used to the hardships of horse & wagon a few things should be kept in mind.

There is NO GASOLINE in South Pass City.  Nearest services are in Lander, 32 miles to the North or Farson, 40 Miles to the South.  PLAN AHEAD.

Some visitors are unused to dirt roads.  Take it slow & take your time.

South Pass City is at 8000 feet, you may feel the altitude.  Good shoes, water & knowing your own limits will make your visit fun & safe.
